A Bloody Sock

So last night my park run was just wonderful minus two things, but I'll get to those after I talk about how much I love running at this park. I wore my long leggings from Target, which I love and my new Nike long sleeve shirt that I got from Mr. R's mom. I have found that running in appropriate clothes makes running in the cold a little more bearable. Anyways, the run was going great, I was cruising and I just love running there. It seriously seems like I was only running for ten minutes and I was done.

So onto the bad. I'm pretty sure my Nike+ is dead. AGAIN. It said, activity stopped, which has happened before, and I know there is no reviving the +, so tonight I'm going to give it one more try at the gym and hopefully it springs back to life somehow, or else it's yet ANOTHER Nike+ for me. I would be angry if I didn't have it for the race this weekend, so I'll have to pick one up ASAP. Anyways, I put in 5 miles, but the Nike+ died at, yup, you heard me 4.91 miles. Seriously little plus. Seriously!? You couldn't hang on for another .08 miles? Oh well, tonight I am hoping for a revival.

Then, I sometimes get bloody socks because I get little cuts in between my toes when I run. This is incredibly weird, I know, and for some reason, I knew I was going to have a bloody sock yesterday after I ran. I get back to Mr. R's, and after dinner I was getting ready to get in the shower and I take off my shoe. I realize it is the WORST bloody sock EVER! Mr. R said," you are a freak" and then I look down at my shoe. I BLED THROUGH MY BRAND NEW SHOES! This has NEVER happened to me before, and of course, the second run I run in them, there is blood on them now. Great, thanks a lot. So I took a picture. I am so sad.

Photobucket
Mr. R said I should run with a toe cap. I asked him what it was. He said it was like a condom for your toe. What in the heck. Does anyone else run/use/know of these? I may have to invest before Saturday. I am actually feeling really good about Saturday though. Last night I hammered out the miles so fast and I felt really good about running so I think even though it's longer than a training run I've done recently, I'll be fine.

Other than the sock and the + problems the run was great, and Mr. R surprised me with a super cute long sleeve pink Nike Shirt last night! It was so unlike him and I LOVE the shirt. I am thinking I am going to wear it with my running skirt this weekend for my race. It has a mesh back and he said it was for Valentines Day but he hates Valentines Day so therefore he gave it to me now. Whatever works.

So tonight I'll be doing some weights at the gym and I'm going to try to get in some stair master and maybe a little bit of elliptical. It all depends on how many freaks, I mean people are at the gym.

xoxo

**Update! So yes, I've seen all your concern for my toes. I've been wearing the same socks since high school, so I don't think that's neccesarily the problem. I also have had bloody toes since as long as I can remember and it's not from a blisters just weird little cuts that I get. I sometimes get them on a 2 mile run, and not on a 13 mile run and vice versa. Wierd, I know! I've gotten my shoes professionally fitted, and asked people about this and they have said put on a bandaid, (which isn't happening) or put on some second skin, which is what I'm going to try tonight at the gym. Any other good tips? I'm all ears!**

Oh my gosh how does that happen?!?!? I mean, I understand blisters...but wow. This is probably a dumb question, but have you tried different socks?

That stinks, poor new shoe! Poor toes!

I always have bloody socks after a marathon, but never after 5 miles. YIKES.

oh my gosh!!! your poor toe!!! that must be so painful!!!!! i have no advice to give, but I just wanted to say *HUGS*. glad you had a good run though!!

yikes. no advice either but just be careful on your run this weekend. are your nails short enough and are you wearing the right sock and sneaker? i'm a new reader but have you gotten your shoes professional fitted before?

Yikes. You are hardcore!

I know they make little finger condoms (sold in the first aid section of Walgreens), but I've never heard of toe condoms. Maybe if you have giant toes you can just use the finger ones? Clearly I'm no help.

Good luck with your race!

oh no! there must be something preventative you can do about the cuts??? i bleed all over new shoes,t oo! but the back where the top of the back of the sneaker is, cuz i always get a blister there. i wonder if your skin is dry? maybe vaseline???? what are the cuts coming from??

Oh my goodness... I just died laughing at the toe cap comment. People were starting to stare! Ha! Yes, they do exist, and you should definitely try it.

I've had the Nike + problem and realized that it was the white part coming a bit lose from the iPod while I ran. You might check that tonight to see if that's the issue.

Battle scars.....wear your shoes with pride :-)

Oh my gosh, that is the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Have you tried rubbing Eucherin Aquaphor between your toes?

I hate V-day, too. My husband proposed to me on V-day just to try to make me like the silly day.

I hope your race is great. Your toe issue is quite strange. Keep us posted if you find something to help you.

Don't get me started on Nike +. It's a terrible piece of equipment. If you want I will gladly mail you mine for a back up later.

It looks like last night's bloody toe was your little toe on the outside of your right foot? Perhaps a little more room in the toe box of your shoe? I know you like Nikes, which tend to run narrow. What about something like a New Balance or Saucony?

i have NEVER had bloody toes (knock on wood). looks painful!

have you tried the Injinji socks? (the toe socks) maybe they would help.

Wow that's pretty gnarly looking! YIKES CHICA!!

I've heard of toe caps before. Road Runner Sports sells them . . .I believe. I don't think they're too pricey. Don't know how well they work?!?

WoW! Interesting issue! Hopefully, someday, you can figure something out for that!

That stinks about getting the blood on your shoe! I would be upset too, i like to keep my shoes as clean as I can for as long as i can. Good luck with the second skin - I have used it a little in high school and it seemed to work but who knows!

Billy said...

Ugh!!!

(sorry - don't do well at the sight of blood..)

That sucks though. Hope you get it figured out!

I have no advice for you, but hope you get your nike+ issue solved soon!

Marlene said...

Yikes! Sorry about your bloody shoes. :(

I have not heard of anything like that... I hope you can figure out something that helps.

Kelly said...

I get bloody toes a lot... it's usually one of my toenails that has a jagged edge and cuts the toe next to it. But that is so sad for your shoes.

Marathon Maritza said...

Good lord, that is blood-dy! I'm gonna assume you've already tried bodygliding the hell out of your feet, right? Including in between the toes?

I get bloody socks on long runs often, but usually because of blood blisters. And yes, I bodyglide the hell out of my feet and doesn't help me, so I don't know why I'm suggesting it for you. Hoping for a miracle, perhaps?

Sorry, this comment was worthless. LOL!

Oz Runner said...

You should get a shirt made that says "Run 'Til You Bleed!"

Hope the blood washes out of the new shoes.

Good luck on the race this weekend!

bless your heart! what in the world?? i hope that doesn't happen to me ever. i would freak! i hope your run this weekend is good and i hope your Nike+ comes back to life!!

What ARE you doing to your feet girl!

If the cuts are between your toes (Mr. R's right - that's freaky), the toe condoms don't sound like they'd help.

I like the second skin idea.

Stuart said...

Prevention is better than a cure go for toughening up the 'in between' skin with surgical spirit

Toe condoms can be had from Road Runners though

Oh no!!! Your shoes too? How DOES that happen.

This just proves how hardcore you are, not many runners can say this.

I don't know if anyone has recommended this yet . . . You may want to look into motion control shoes or inserts.

I have training shoes that are motion control and racing shoes that have inserts. I used to bleed all the time . . . RIGHT WHERE YOUR SOCK AND SHOE SHOW, but not since making those changes.

Keep on Keep'n on!

i have had a bloody shoe too! AND when it was new... just makes you look more hardcore :) i ended up taking them back to RR because they were messing with my feet but they took them back with 150 miles AND blood!

yay for new shirts! i was just saying i have been actually looking forward to going running in the cold to wear my new clothes :)

I started putting Bag Balm on my feets before putting on my Wright Socks or Sole double layer socks and all my feet woes are over. It's not stinky and really really works. Good luck gorgeous! I mourn the passing of newness on the hawt arse nikes!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but have you tried bodyglide on your feet. I don't have bloody toes problems, but I heard it helps.

Just saw your comment about Flax at the Happy Runner. Too funny!! Between flax and running...yea, I'm with you!

Felice Devine said...

Nuts!

Well, I get bloody toes, too, and have for ages. Long runs, short runs. I have to make sure that my toenails are not too long and don't have anything that remotely resembles a sharp edge. If I do that, I'm usually OK, but sometimes the edges sneak by unnoticed until I end up w/bloody socks.

Good luck!

Laurel said...

Don't worry about the blood on your shoes. It makes you look all hardcore and sh%t. Sweet!

I put body glide on my feet. Usually on my heel and the side of my big toe, but you might want to try it between your toes. (put it on your finger and then rub it in there).

I would say vaseline, but that would get too gooey in the sweaty sock.

Hope you figure something out. Does it hurt when you're running?

I'm so sorry for your sad toes and your pretty pink shoes! But you ARE hardcore. Good luck on your race. Run like a girl!

I swear by Mole Skin! I have bled through new shoes more times than I can count. I think it just makes you look gritty - you will look cute in your pink shirt & running skirt, but this way, people will know you're a force to be reckoned with! You have bloody shoes! haha

RunToTheFinish said...

A condom for your toe, now that is a classic!

Ok the dying battery issue is what kept me away from Nike+

Tara Gibson said...

awe your poor toes! I hope you find a solution to help them!

Clip your gnarly toenails. Problem solved!

Melanie said...

I have the same bloody problem, and it's totally due to toenaills. I keep mine trimmed, but I have found that that's not enough. My toes kind of sit on top of the one to the right, so I think when I run the nail cuts into the side of the toe beside it.

I did get the toe caps, and it eliminates the problem. They're easy to get used to wearing, and I only wear 1 on each foot on the toe that causes the most problems. If I wear them on a 20+ mile run, then I start to feel them and they make my toes sore.

I also found that if I make sure to really file the nail so it's perfectly rounded, i don't have the problem.

cute site, i just ran across it. i ran the nike/tiffanys race, 1st half ever. fun but a little hilly. im also running the half this weekend in irvine. good luck to you!

Nikemom said...

OMG! Toe Condoms {caps}. Never heard of those. I want a full report once you try them out. Hopefully your toes won't reproduce. ahahahaha

Megan said...

Hahaha ... I love that everyone is so intrigued by your bloody sock! I bet you might break the 100 comment mark if you ever write a post about throwing up! :)

Also, I am extremely into the toe condoms. I do not run but I want them, just for fun. Kind of like toe socks, but cooler and less obnoxious. Tell Mr. R. he is one hip dude to know about a cool thing like toe condoms.

Kim said...

You need toe socks. That's what I wear to run in. They are dri fit and are great for cutting out bloddy toes. They come from Injinji. You can get on injinji.com or they have them at REI or some of the running stores around. Definately look them up.
